Before you go out and buy lights to hang on everything not moving, let me give you some tips first. Here are my dos and donts for using Holiday Lights. 1) Do pick a theme for your decor, like all white lights or blue or red. This will make more of an impact and ads some design style. No offense to the multi-color lovers out there. That is a different look all together that is equally charming. Those people might use jewel tones for candles and ornaments to add to the colorful scene. 2) Do not use different light sets together. Some people mix up their old and new lighting and I don't like to see this. When you are dealing with electricity, even this low voltage type, you need to think about fire safety. Before you string up the lights outdoors and indoors, maybe you can take your kids or a small group of kids to your local firehouse to teach them some things about fire safety. This time of year is high on the list for fires caused by dried live trees lit up with faulty lighting. Call the fire house first to see when they could give you the tour and talk to your group. Then, throw out those old lights and buy them all from one place. GKI Bethlehem Lighting is my favorite if you can find them, but GE or another brand name would be a safe bet too. 3) Do wrap the lights loose around the branches or railings. Some times lighting gets too tight and can cause those blackouts in the strands we hate to see. One tip is to string your lights while they are on. Yes, this is not a hazard unless you get a call or a visitor. In that case, turn them off until you can get back to decorating. This keeps them cool and you can be sure to see any outages before you finish decorating. Once all the lights are in, then add the BLING! 4) Do not plug in more than 4 to 6 light strands together. Most companies will tell you on the packaging how many lights can snap together without over loading the little fuses. You may want to get extra bulbs and fuses when you are at the store, they never have them after the season is underway. If you think you will need extra, buy them all together when you get the big sale price. Yes, they may knock off another $2 later, but please save your self some headache and time...buy them now. You will spend more in time and gas going back for more lights, trust me. 100 count light sets, you can bet no more than 5 linked together. 25 and 50 count, I would make sure no more than 6 together. From my experience, and I have seen my share of Macy's decorating, you can use the 6 ft and 8 ft extension cords to add more lights. The cords are easily hidden. No one will see it and you can be sure the lights will stay on and not blow a circuit or a fuse. You can also use black electrical tape to make sure the connections are safe and secure. This is a good husband job, they love hanging the lights. You can come back with your ornaments and glitter flowers when he's done. 5) Do not over load your outlets. If you have any questions, electricians don't mind a short consultation to let you know how to wire your Holiday decor. Better safe than sorry when you are lighting up like an airport outdoors. There are decorating companies that can help you and they know exactly how to wire everything safely. 6) Do have fun with your kids or friends in this process. Many times I have invited people over for drinks, music and games when we decorate for the Holidays. Make it an event to remember. They lights are great and all, but sharing memories with loved ones is priceless. That's why we really have these Holidays anyway, right? Anyway, lets talk about the transition from the formal dining room to the modern day kitchen area. Here is a little more for you city dwellers to digest about the dining room and its furniture... A dining room is a room for consuming food. In modern times it is usually adjacent to the kitchen for convenience in serving, although in medieval times it was often on an entirely different floor level. Historically the dining room is furnished with a rather large dining table and a number of dining chairs; the most common table shape is generally rectangular with two armed end chairs and an even number of un-armed side chairs along the long sides.

In the Middle Ages, upper class Britons and other European nobility in castles or large manor houses dined in the Great Hall. This was a large multi-function room capable of seating the bulk of the population of the house. The family would sit at the head table on a raised dais, with the rest of the population arrayed in order of diminishing rank away from them. Tables in the great hall would tend to be long trestle tables with benches. The sheer number of people in a Great Hall meant it would probably have had a busy, bustling atmosphere. Suggestions that it would also have been quite smelly and smoky are probably, by the standards of the time, unfounded.

The owners of such properties began to develop a taste for more intimate gatherings in smaller 'parlors' or privee parlors' off the main hall. Over time, the nobility took more of their meals in the parlor, and the parlor became, functionally, a dining room (or was split into two separate rooms). Eventually dining in the Great Hall became something that was done primarily on special occasions.

A typical dining room will contain a dining table with dining chairs arranged along the sides and ends of the table, as well as other pieces of furniture. In modern homes, the dining room is increasingly used only for formal dining with guests or on special occasions. Informal daily meals are often taken in the kitchen, breakfast nook or family room. This was traditionally the case in England, where the dining room would for many families be used only on Sundays, other meals being eaten in the kitchen. Often tables in modern dining rooms will have a removable leaf to allow for the larger number of people present on those special occasions without taking up extra space when not in use. According to feng shui, your garden, just like the interior of your home, is symbolic of your current life and/or your aspirations.

When your garden design is created with your personal preferences for colors, scents, seating groups, entertainment style, the principles of feng shui are well served. If fabulous garden design using feng shui is of particular interest to you, you’ll want to own my friend, Minnie Kansman’s book, Spirit Gardens.

Regularly maintained and beautiful landscaping around a home makes you feel good and is, of course, good feng shui.

And if gardens are neglected - they can nag you and set you into a state of overwhelm in seconds. Not surprisingly -- not good feng shui.

The good news is that weeding, planting, raking, etcetera is wonderful therapy and immensely satisfying. Even if you choose to direct others to do so rather than physically do the work yourself, both the process and the results soothe you.

The patio and garden areas are particularly important feng shui wise when the footprint of the home (the shape the perimeter walls create) is irregular, as many custom new homes are.

When the footprint is like a lower case “h,” for example, a sizable section of the house is extended on the far left corner. This means that both the Fame/Reputation area and the Relationship area are outside the home.

A footprint like a capital “C” will mean the Creativity/Children area is an alcove patio/garden.

A backwards “C” puts the Family/Physical Health area outside.

Patio areas with comfortable seating groups and pots planted with healthy plants, adjoining gardens with vigorous blooms “fill” those areas with lots of wonderful energy.

Garden art, statues, and fountains provide powerful symbols to enhance particular areas.

All that is well and good. But what about the accidental sculpture?

Like kid’s bicycles laying in the front yard. Yup, a symbol that the kids rule the roost – and a physical hazard, too.

Or how about a car that needs fixing – and remains untouched for months? Perhaps a symbol that the owners don’t really want to go anywhere.

Go outside and look at your garden as if you’ve never seen it before.

Outside of your day-to-day paints there are some special types of paints that you would only use on specific types of painting jobs. There are paints for covering textured ceilings and even specific paints for coating acoustic tiles.

If the ceiling you're about to paint is textured then you'll have to say goodbye to rollers. These simply won't work with a textured stucco-type ceiling. You'll have to look at spraying and this means plenty of ventilation and a certain level of skill - which if you don't possess you'll have to hire somebody in instead. Otherwise you're just going to make a huge mess which is the last thing you really want in your home right?

To prime your walls or not to prime your walls? Well the simple answer is more often than not you will need to. There's far more reasons for applying a coat of primer before you start painting. First off most surfaces need to be primed - especially if the walls are porous or damaged in any way - recent touch up jobs on cracks for example. You'll also save a small fortune by only having to apply one or two coats of actual paint - if the surface is primed you're just going to get a much better finish. Otherwise you'll be applying one coat of paint after another and you might still wind up with streaks or dark patches - especially if the original wall color was dark.

If you want to cut down on the mess you make while you're painting your ceilings then make sure you've mixed your paint properly. To test the consistency of your paint try it on a small patch of wall. If the paint isn't thick enough it will run down the wall. That's not what you want because that means lots of drips from the ceiling so you know you need to check the consistency.

One of the most useful items in your painting toolkit is an extension pole for your roller so that you're not damaging your neck and shoulders. It will allow you to effectively paint ceilings - especially the higher types of ceilings. While painting try to keep the pole at an angle - this will help stop you getting covered in splatters of paint and keep the major stresses off your back, neck and shoulders.
